Dell Corporation - Interesting things that I remember about them

Dell had this online configurator when I was trying to build and buy this awesome PC back in 1995/96. I did not even have proper internet access. Essentially it was terminal shell internet access that compromized of a boring unix shell with "lynx" as the "text" non-GUI browser.

This cousin of mine allowed to access the internet via "TCP/IP" on his PC and the internet was such a pretty world... wowie :). The world wide web... or www... as we lovingly call it.

I remember that at that time Dell was the "only" or maybe "the first" to have a direct to customer sales model via online "custom" configuration. I dont remember HP, Compaq or others offering custom "made to order" PCs at the time.

I vaguely recollect another article that mentioned how Dell had exceeded Compaq and others in the market due to their "online" "build to order" "one week inventory only" model.

Now Michael Dell who started the company at the age of 19 out of his Dorm Room, has assigned the "official" title of CEO to Kevin Rollins, his right hand man. He remains as Chairman but the COO is now the CEO. :) Key words and catch phrases.. LOL!

Anyways enjoy the article and the detailed interview at the San Francisco Chronicle:

statement of purpose? why do i have this blog?

Just thought I should chronicle my tryst with technology over the years. How I think it has affected me, my life decisions (yes sometimes it does), and everyone else... how it has shaped business and how organizations have shaped and used technology.

Interesting yet!!! ? we shall see how regular I can be here.

Meanwhile thanks for visiting and Google away.

ciao,

Abhi
